Presentation of the book "Rome's Sicilian Slave Wars"
Date: 19th May 2020
Venue: University of London School of Advanced Studies, Institute of Classical Studies, Senate House, Malet Street, London
Conference of Natale Barca on: Rome's Sicilian Slave Wars / Revolt of Eunus, 136-132 BC; Revolt of Servius, 105-100 BC.
Two large revolts of slaves, led by Eunus and by Salvius respectively, took place in Sicily in the last decades of the II century BC, when this island was a Roman provincia. The first started as a localized rising by 400 Syrian slaves in Henna, became a widespread and established an independent kingdom that had a Hellenistic imprint and references to Syria. The second had characteristics similar to the first. In both cases, the Roman response was a relentless and ruthless suppression.
